1. Arrangements for 2010 are as follows:

Year 1 of Junior Cert: Enrolment takes place on Saturday 6th February 2010 at any time between the hours of 9.00 a.m. - 1.00 p.m. Students who wish to enroll should attend Bridgetown VC on enrolment day with their parents. Students should bring with them a pen and their Bus Ticket or Family Identity Number if they wish to apply for school transport (this number is written on existing bus tickets). Students should also bring their PPS Number. Students will be asked to indicate subject preferences on that day. A draft enrolment policy for our new ASD unit is being prepared and when completed it will have to be approved by staff and ratified by the Board of Management.

4. College Rules

The college rules are listed on the inside front cover of the Homework Journal that students in the college use as a diary-cum-planner. From a discipline point of view, the college believes that the behaviour of students is their responsibility and the responsibility of their parents. Parents should be familiar with the school rules and should sign the back of the Homework Journal. Parents will also be asked to sign and return a form to indicate that they are familiar with the college rules. We are currently carrrying out a review of school rules in accordance with recently published NEWB guidelines.

5. College Hours

 

8.55 a.m. - 4.00 p.m. - Monday and Tuesday.

9.05 a.m. - 3.35 p.m. - Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

 

Students are supervised during these times. The management cannot accept responsibility for students outside of these times. Students who wish to leave the college during the working day are required to sign out and produce an explanatory note from their parents.

6. Transport

The School Transport Scheme run by Bus Éireann is administered by the VECTransport Liaison Officer. Application forms are available from the Principal in Bridgetown VC. Students enrolling forYear 1 of the Junior Certificate programme are offered application forms on enrolment day. For transport in September, these forms must be completed and returned during April. Parents are reminded that failure to apply in time may leave a student without a bus ticket in September.

7. School Books

College is very aware of the cost, size and weight of new books and does all in its limited power to try to keep the financial burden on students and parents as light as possible. A School Book Grant Scheme operates for Leaving Certificate students to assist eligible parents with the cost of buying books. All textbooks are provided on loan to Junior Certificate students for a small rental fee.

8. Learning Support & Resource

Learning Support & Resource under criteria laid down by the National Council for Special Education and/or the Department of Education & Science. A range of provisions are available to students such as one to one or small group tuition or reduced class size in English and Maths where possible.The learning support and resource teacher works in close co-operation with teachers, parents, education psychologist and other outside agencies.

9. Physical Education

The college has three PE teachers and PE is compulsory for all students.The college offers an extensive programme in physical education at both junior and senior level. A well equipped gymnasium, outdoor tennis and basketball courts and a playing pitch are available to students. There is also a fitness equipment area available to senior students.

10. Guidance Counsellors

The college has two Guidance Counsellors. A guidance service is provided for all students and they are advised regarding subject choices and what courses they should follow in line with their preferred career options.

11. Student Support

The college operates both aYear Head and a voluntary Tutor system.Named teachers offer pastoral care to specified Form Classes and to individual students who may have problems.

12. Supervised Study

Supervised study is organised after school, Monday to Thursday, throughout the school year. Study runs for a two-hour period each evening and is supervised by teachers. Students pay for the service on a 5 week basis. The college believes that supervised study provides a valuable opportunity for students to complete homework and study assignments.

13.Health & Safety

It is college policy to provide a safe and secure work environment for staff and students. Each year students are trained in how to evacuate the college building safely in the event of an emergency. This involves form class training for new entrants followed by a total evacuation drill for all students and staff.

14. Personal Accident Insurance

A personal Accident Insurance Scheme operates in the college. All students are strongly advised to join this scheme.

15. Social Health

Most students in the college follow a programme in Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE). The programme helps to build students’ self esteem and it gives them an opportunity to relate to each other in a way that builds assertiveness and respect. The programme includes modules on Relations and Sexuality Education. All Junior Certificate students follow the SPHE programme in the non-exam subject Social Health. Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) students follow the SPHE programme as part of the subject, Social Education.

16. Student Awards Scheme

In May 2001 the college held its first formal awards ceremony. Awards were presented for achievement in different areas of school life. In each year there was an academic award for excellence in academic achievement throughout the year, a sports award for outstanding performance and sportsmanship, an outstanding achievement award for application and commitment throughout the year and an attendance award for exceptional attendance. There was also a Student of the Year Award. This award is given to a senior Leaving Certificate student. The Student of the Year 2008 was Eoin White. Since then the scheme was further developed. New awards have been introduced. In 2002 awards for a valuable contribution to the school in the Arts at both junior and senior level were introduced. There are also awards given for best attendance and outstanding achievement in Science. In 2008, an award for Best Agricultural Scientist was introduced.There is also an award for Excellence in Technical Subjects, Duais Uí Mhórda.

The support of parents for this fund is very much appreciated by the college.
